Kerrville Birding Hotspots

In the heart of Texas Hill Country, is a haven for birding enthusiasts. Its diverse habitats, ranging from riparian woodlands to rolling grasslands, create an ideal environment for a rich variety of bird species. Notable birding hotspots like Kerr Wildlife Management Area and the Kerrville River Trail attract both novice and seasoned birders with the promise of spotting everything from the vibrant Painted Bunting to the elusive Golden-cheeked Warbler. These natural sanctuaries not only offer an abundance of avian life but also provide picturesque settings that enhance the birding experience.

  • Kerr Wildlife Management Area: Located off FM 1340, with adjacent areas Houston-Schmacher Road and Spring Trap. The main entrance is open Monday - Friday during the day. Closed on weekends and holidays. Some closures during hunting seasons, check ahead of time.
  • Flat Rock Park: A long park with most birders preferring the off-leash dog park stretch.
  • Kerrville River Trail: A 6+ miles long trail along the Guadalupe River, subject to posted park rules. Favorite starting places/trailheads are Schreiner University (limited parking hours during the school year); Kerrville-Schreiner Park; G Street Bridge; Downtown at the Hwy 16 bridge and Tranquility Island, Lowry Park, and the Dietert Center.
  • Guadalupe Park: The dam is an important bird attractor. Lots of parking, trees benches and river frontage.
  • Knapp Crossing Park: Also known as the Chili's Boat Ramp, this location offers good views up and down Nimitz Lake.
  • Cypress Creek Park: Good views up and down the Guadalupe River and Nimitz Lake.
  • Ingram City Park: River access with large trees.
  • Low Water Crossings: Many of these have limited parking, safe viewing, and public property so please exercise caution. Some spots on the Guadalupe River are Bear Creek Road, Indian Creek Road, and Cade Loop.
  • Mo-Ranch: Private property with lodging and food. Limited access so always call in advance to establish access.
  • Heart of the Hills Fisheries Science Center: #1 in species seen in popular birding site eBird, but very limited access. Non-holiday Wednesdays 8 AM - 4 PM. Parking at the office with a sign-in sheet. Only walking allowed, no driving.
    • Another place of note - Billy Gene's: Offers great Nimitz Lake views if you are dining on the porch.
Be sure to utilize eBird for more popular birding sites in the area!
